I can't really bring myself to get heavily involved in opposing this guy's nomination. Not on more than a symbolic level, anyway. The fact is, Bush could have nominated a much worse candidate. And there's no chance in hell he's going to nominate someone better (i.e. less conservative) if Roberts isn't confirmed -- which he will be, given the balance of congress currently.
The thing is, we knew we were going to get a conservative. The relief is that Roberts is not a batshit-crazy, promise-keeping, birth-control-denying True Believer(tm). Nor does he seem like an I'm-going-to-take-a-dump-on-affirmative-action-right-after-I-exploit-it sleaze like Clarence Thomas. He seems more like a cross between Ned Flanders and Judge Smails from Caddyshack. Which makes the Wonkette-esque gay jokes also reminscent of The Simpsons ("stupid sexy Flanders").
Personally, I think it's the smartest political move this adminisration has made that hasn't involved ursurping international law or driving up the deficit.
personally, I'm with this guy.
