I say name-check all of the time -- as do others -- for example, "There are some bands I'd like to name-check, and one of these is R.E.M." Pavement, "The Unseen Power of the Picket Fence."
Of course, I also say "y'all," so what do I know?
And that guy DOES look like Charlemagne -- and from the performance, he was the guy in the band I wanted to be, although every time I grow a mustache, people say it's pretty terrible.
I deploy name-check and name-drop interchangeably. And whenever I use a word wrong, I simply declare a step forward in linguistic evolution. There is no stopping progress.

Had no idea Charlemagne played piano for The Hold Steady!
Franz also shot a mean game of pool at the Picador (nee Gabe's).
Crain Finn is The Man. Not the oppressive foe to minorities Man, but the paunchy thirtysomething that can rock Man.
To me it's Leonard Bernstein, Leonid Breshnev, Lenny Bruce and Lester Bangs, birthday party, cheesecake, jelly bean, boom.
