Inherent Vice trailer

Bumped from Trevor's comment...

Can't be much argument that that's the best book promotion there ever was. If you're of a mind, have a look at this Simpsons. It's the same voice, different accent.

Has anyone ever played it better than Pynchon? "That's with the seeds and stems o' course..." Give me a fucking break. Classic.

Have to say I was sorry to be disappointed in Inherent Vice. For all its clever enthusiasm, there were too many thin characters and way too much reliance on the playing out of mysteries involving people we weren't invested in. Maybe that comes with the genre, but I limped along to the finish and closed the last page with a shrug. How can someone write Against the Day and Inherent Vice?

2666 disappointed me, for what it's worth

Me too, dunks. I liked the first, say, half. But goodness gracious that needed an editor. By the end ... I'd say it was the most boring long book I ever finished without being required to by a teacher.

I didn't dislike it nearly that much! I didn't even dislike it. It just disappointed me (I don't know when I've had higher hopes for a novel, especially after reading The Savage Detectives earlier this year).

The reviews of it (I like glancing at them after reading the book) crack me up, though. Most critics give Bolano credit for writing what one of his characters argues, within 2666, is the best kind of novel. Since he's written what he set out to write and considers to be the best type of work -- how fantastic! He's a genius!

Sorry to hear you didn't like IV, Grendelle. Sounded cool to me, so I was looking forward to it. Now I've downgraded it to a "read later."

For the record, the places that clip showed were literally the streets I walked down to go surfing when I was growing up. Manhattan Beach and El Porto in Los Angeles' "South Bay". I can't say I love "Gordita Beach" as a fake place name, potentially because of the bad association with a failed Taco Bell menu item.

If you liked Vineland, you'd like it. If you didn't, like I didn't, you won't. And you probably really should read it later since it will be like a trip back to your stomping grounds.
