I'm shocked, shocked that an 800-page novel with footnotes has
won for fiction. This will probably force me to seek out his shortest book and fearfully crack it open (anybody read him? El Gordo? Dunkeys?). But it's about time for Didion and Merwin, it seems. Here is the

I've only read _The Ice-Shirt_, which was one of his cycle of seven books about North America. Just awful. But I've heard good things about his other books, esp. The Royal Family and Rainbow Stories (right titles?). I didn't look at the NYT article, but he's pretty amazing; raises research to a whole new level (commando raids in Afghanistan, doing crack, etc). Ian, you've read some of his books, haven't you?
