Terri Schiavo

This whole case makes me apoplectic.

If I am ever incapacitated by this apoplexy, please turn the machines off. I feel so sorry for her husband -- I can't imagine the rage, fear, and pain I would feel if I was in his position. I'm really surprised he hasn't done something stupid like shoot her. I think I would.

And, considering Tom "Complete-Bastard-in-Need-of-an-Ethics-Indictment" DeLay's involvement, yet another reason to be ashamed of my Texas roots. I really wish I was from some place sensible.

But, at least I still have Steve Earle, Tex Mex, Wes Anderson, and The Mars Volta. So far, they haven't let me down (I liked The Life Aquatic).

Perhaps I am exhibiting a rare moment of extreme optimism, but I really think that Tom DeLay is gonna go DOWN DOWN DOWN, in flames and in shame. Word on the street (okay, from my parents in Houston) is that even the Bug Man's most fervent (ie, crazed) supporters are starting to peel away, and the constituents who have long hated him are picking up their browbeaten selves and starting to feel some confidence in going after him. I hope a strong Democrat steps forward for the next round. Perhaps...dare I say it?...El Gordo de Amore?

Pretty much everyone involved in the situation is screwed. I feel sorry for her parents, because they clearly can't let her go, and her husband, because he's the only person who has the right to make the decision in this case. The problem, from what I understand, is that her husband is dating someone and her parents think he's trying to get rid of his wife so he can get remarried. But holy hell, she's not gonna wake up. If she'd been buried 15 years ago (it's my feeling that she died then, but medicine kept the final coupe-de-grace from occuring) and he was still mourning her now, everyone would think he'd lost his mind and would tell him to go out and meet someone else. Let the poor woman go.

Write your congressman and tell him not to waste the taxpayer's money on these kinds of bills.

I wish Joseph Welch was around to bitchslap some legislators.

And I wish I could be as hopeful as SER regarding DeLay. I went home over break, and, as usual, it was a Thomas Wolfian affair of new highways, big box stores, and mini-malls. I got lost twice.

Another reason for optimism...the American people broadly disapprove of the Congressional intervention in the Schiavo case, and they also think that Congress is doing it - gasp! - for political advantage. Oh, how I would love to see it all backfire on the Bug Man and his yes-men:

What kills me is that, aside from the political she said she said Congress said, CLEARLY GOD HAS WANTED HER DEAD FOR 15 YEARS. Why these religious people think that going to extreme efforts to prolong her coma somehow pleases God is really beyond me. With no human interference, she dies. Period. So obviously God wants her to die. Why do they hate God and what He wants?

(What if there was something important she was supposed to do in heaven, but because of forced feeding tube technology, her arrival has been delayed?)

Gwarbot -- I like, but neither album holds a candle to At the Drive In.

Neither does Sparta for that matter.

He also forgot to add, "Unless you're an Iraqi."

And the ironies of the case extend even further. The only way she's even been kept alive is from funds from Medicaid and from a malpractice lawsuit, both of which the Bug Man and his cohorts are itchin' to get rid of.

Mars Volta? Blech. (Altho their contribution to the new Handsome Boy Modeling School record is neat.)

it's unreal, the tactics they're trying. this from today's times:

The lawyer, David Gibbs, also said Ms. Schiavo's religious beliefs as a Roman Catholic were being infringed because Pope John Paul II has deemed it unacceptable for Catholics to refuse food and water.

"We are now in a position where a court has ordered her to disobey her church and even jeopardize her eternal soul," Mr. Gibbs said.

if this is the kind of treatment these people expect from their god, no wonder they're so insane

At two o'clock this morning, I got up to let the dogs out (yes, in case you were still wondering, it was I who let the dogs out), I flipped on the radio to wait for them to do their business, and I heard "...this is BBC News. An American court has refused to reinsert a feeding tube into a brain-damaged Florida woman...." The announcer sounded almost apologetic, almost embarrassed to be reading such drivel. And I thought, "This is the freaking BBC. We're infecting the whole world with this garbage! Who freaking cares! There are six billion people out there and this is the lead story for the rest of the world's best news source! What if it was happening in Argentina? Or the Congo? Or Mongolia? 'A Mongolian court has refused to reinsert...' What are they distracting us from?" And then the dogs had peed and we all went back to bed.

Also, think of the book deals that are must already be twitching the touch-tome fingers of agents and publishers everywhere.

I myself was imagining the campaign commercials that are undoubtedly already being filmed by DeLay's flunkeys on behalf of conservative candidates running in 2006. "Bill Nelson voted to kill Terri Schiavo!" or "Tom DeLay will always fight on behalf of the poor, the weak, the vegetative!"

Does anyone know how Leach voted? I should go look that up on the global InterWeb.

Next thing you know congress will make it illegal for any man and woman in the same room not to have sex with eachother. Because in so refusing they are interfering with the creation of life. Which is the same as killing someone. Obviously.

You know who really deserves some credit for acting admirably through this mess? The judges, particularly those at the federal courts. In the face of immense political pressure, these guys have considered the case before them and the relevant law and issued well-reasoned opinions. And that includes what I've seen of the dissenting opinion from the 11th Circuit panel.

It's interesting how these lower court judges--regardless of who appointed them to the bench--have largely managed to maintain an objective and rational view of the on-point case law whereas a significant minority of the Supreme Coourt justices look like they're running for political office.

These guys should be applauded for making this Kafkaesque world we've been living in the past four years seem a bit more hopeful.

I am willing to campaign to make "Roper's Law" a reality -- Who's with me?

Grendel said...

I would back you on Roper's Law, El Gordo, except that its reach would necessarily encompass porpoise waxing, and I can't afford to lose a hobby.

Holy mackerel, I was just watching our TiVoed Daily Shows from earlier this week. Did you guys watch Monday's coverage of the Schiavo fiasco? Incredible - one of the top 10 Daily Shows I've seen.
